A Centre for Montessori Teacher Education and Professional Formation.
RMMC grew organically out of The Royal Master’s School (RMS) to formalise and extend the long-standing teacher development work that had been taking place within the school.
Founded in 2001, The Royal Master’s School had, for many years, trained its classroom staff internally through structured observation, mentoring, and in-house professional development. The school’s Children’s Houses also served as Practice Teaching sites for Adult Learners from established Montessori training centres.
As the school grew and the demand for well-prepared Montessori educators increased, the need for a more formal teacher education programme became clear. In response, Royal Master’s Montessori Centre was established in 2018 as a dedicated training institution to prepare adult learners for professional work in Montessori environments.
Our first cohort consisted of three parents of RMS pupils who had become fascinated by the development of their children and wanted to understand more deeply the educational approach guiding their growth, Montessori. In January 2020, RMMC hosted representatives of the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) for an on-site verification visit following a comprehensive self-study process. Shortly before the global lockdown in March, the Centre received MACTE accreditation for its Early Childhood Diploma Programme.
Since then, RMMC has consistently prepared adult learners, some of whom have gone on to establish their own Montessori schools, while others now work in Montessori environments both within Nigeria and abroad. Many of our alumni had no prior experience in education before enrolling in the programme.
While RMMC shares a heritage and campus precinct with The Royal Master’s School, it operates as a distinct institution dedicated to Montessori teacher education.
The Centre remains committed to preparing educators through in-depth study, practical engagement with Montessori materials, careful attention to the development of the child, and ongoing mentorship.
To be a leading institution for authentic Montessori teacher education across the developmental stages of the child, forming principled and competent educators who contribute meaningfully to children, communities, and society.
To provide Montessori teacher education for adults, grounded in authentic Montessori practice, academic study, and guided classroom experience, forming educators of integrity, discipline, and professional competence.
We believe that true education serves a higher purpose and must be rooted in moral integrity and reverence for God.
We adhere strictly to the pedagogy as defined by Dr. Maria Montessori, without dilution or "modernisation" that compromises the method.
We maintain high standards in academic writing, material fabrication, and professional conduct.
We model the self-control, order, and precision we hope to cultivate in the child.
We regard the child not as an empty vessel to be filled, but as a person engaged in the work of self-construction.
We approach Montessori education as a serious discipline requiring careful study, disciplined thinking, and intellectual honesty.
We treat our environment and resources with care, recognising that responsibility for the world must be cultivated through practice.
We believe that the careful formation of children contributes to the development of a just and flourishing society.
Theoretical study alone is insufficient for the preparation of a Montessori educator. Royal Master’s Montessori Centre is situated within a working educational precinct, giving our Adult Learners immediate access to a living laboratory.
Our Training Centre is stocked with a full complement of Early Childhood Montessori materials used for demonstration, study, and practice. Adult Learners are responsible for maintaining the order, completeness, and careful condition of these materials, forming habits of precision, stewardship, and respect for the prepared environment.
The Centre also houses an extensive library of works on Montessori education, child development, and pedagogy, including rare texts, early publications, and original works by Maria Montessori herself, as well as journals from North American Montessori Teachers’ Association (NAMTA).
Through our relationship with The Royal Master’s School, Adult Learners engage in observation and teaching practice within fully equipped, authentic Montessori classrooms. This allows the transition from theory to classroom reality to occur naturally and under careful guidance.
The work of forming Montessori educators requires more than theoretical instruction. It requires guidance from practitioners who have spent many years in the classroom and who have themselves lived the discipline of the Montessori method.
The Programme is directed by Seniorba Olatunji, fondly called “Senny” by her colleagues and “Mama” by her trainees, whose decades of experience in Montessori education provide continuity and depth to the formation offered at Royal Master’s Montessori Centre. Under her guidance, Adult Learners are introduced not only to the theory of Montessori education, but also to the habits of observation, patience, humility, discipline and precision that characterise the Montessori Guide.
Alongside this leadership, the Centre periodically welcomes guest lecturers from the wider Montessori community, enriching the programme with additional perspectives drawn from practice and research.
Montessori is more than a classroom approach. It is a scientific study of the child and a method that supports human development. Understand the principles that guide Montessori educators.
